Optic neuritis means inflammation of optic nerve due to unknown cause. Optic neuritis developed sudden painful loss of vision; it may be partial of complete loss of vision in which early recovery is possible.

Optic neuritis means inflammation of optic nerve due to unknown cause. Optic neuritis developed sudden painful loss of vision; it may be partial of complete loss of vision in which early recovery is possible. It can be associated with some autoimmune disorder like SLE, sarcoidosis, Multiple sclerosis, toxicity of anti-tubercular drugs ethambutol isoniazide, some infections like syphilis meningitis, and vitamin B12 deficiency etc.

Symptoms:

Sudden painful loss of vision, pain associated with eye movements, most of the time affect only one eye but may be affects both eyes. Loss of color visions some patients feeling flashing of light or flickering of light.

Ayurvedic view:

Eye is the seat of Pitta dosa and Agni mahabhoot and both are related together, conduction of signals from eye to brain is due to vata dosa when pitta is vitiated to vata sthan they disturbed the function of vata dosa, Inflammation in optic nerve is due to vitiation of pitta dosa and this is disturbed the conduction of optic nerve so treatment should be vata pitta shamak.

Initially pittashamak ras is recommended in optic neuritis like tikt ras pradhan drugs followed by madhur ras pradhan medicine who control the vata function. Sodhana panchkarma chikitsa is very helpful in elimination of pitta dosa like virechan in initial stage after that we used brimhan nasya.

“ Optic neuritis usually occurs in people under age 45, and more often in women. However it can happen to people of any age, especially if they suffer from an autoimmune condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, or have diabetes.”

Some medicine like panchtikta ghrita, Mahatikta ghrita mahatiktak kashayam, guggulutiktakam ghritam or kashayam kaisor guggulu punarnava mandoor saptamrut lauh are helpful in this diseases but ashtang ayurveda and panchkarma centre recommended do not use these medicine without ayurvedic physician consultation.

Home remedies:

  • Some home remedies you can take without consultation this is safe but it is not the complete treatment of optic neuritis.

  • -Turmeric powder has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties take it 2-3 gms with milk twice daily with milk

  • -Ginger is also helpful

  • -Make a paste of amla churna with amla juice and apply it over head called Thalam for 30-45 minutes daily. You can also keep over closed eye for 20 minutes.

  • -Padabhyang with til tail at bed time helps relaxing body and mind.

  • -Surya namaskar and pranayam (Anulom-vilome) is helpful but avoid kapalbhati and any jerky exercise.

  • - Giloya juice is best tikt ras dravya it can helps to eliminating pitta dosa so you can use it 25ml twice daily.
