Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia gravis is an auto-immune neuromuscular disorder in which the circulating antibodies block the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the postsynaptic junction. That leads to block the motor neuron signals to muscles.


  • Cause of Myasthenia gravis is unknown, in some cases it is associated to auto-immune disorder like thyroid, lupus diseases, in some cases myasthenia gravis may be associated with tumor of thymus gland. Also patient of Myasthenia gravis is in the higher risk of any autoimmune disorder such as thyrotoxicosis, Rhematoid arthritis, SLE etc
  • MG may affect people at any age group but commonly found in young women and older men.


  • Painless weakness in the specific muscles and these weakness is progressive in nature with physical activity and recover after a period of rest. In most of the cases first noticeable symptoms is weakness of eye muscles (LPS). And others difficulty in swallowing and speech disturbed may be first symptoms.
  • Diplopia is another symptoms found due to weakness in extraoccular muscles. Eye symptoms worsen with watching tv and reading driving etc.
  • In advance stage Head and neck may involve and found some changes in facial expression.
  • Breathing difficulties because weakness of chest muscles.
  • Difficulties in climbing stairs, lifting objects, rising from a sitting position
  • Difficulties in talking
  • Drooping head
  • Facial palsy
  • Fatigue
  • Drooping of eye lids

Ayurvedic concept in Myasthenia gravis-

Ayurveda described it is due to vitiation of vaat dosa, Agnimandya specilly dhatwagi, Manskshaya, and kaph kshaya. A decreased dhatwagni causes improper or decreased formation of mans dhatu .

Principle of treatment—

Ashtang Ayurveda and panchkarma centre provide complete treatment of Myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis treatment in Ayurveda is completely curable in most of the cases. But some case responds very slowly. Panchkarma treatment in Myasthenia gravis is recommended. Snehana, swedana, Virechana, vasti chikitsa and Nasyam is most beneficial procedures in this case.

  • Manskshay chikitsa
  • Agnideepan specially dhatwagni.
  • In initially katu ras given for promotion of dhatwagni.
  • Later madhur ras and brimhana chikitsa

Ashtang Ayurveda and panchkarma Kendra recommended some home remedies for Myasthenia gravis

1. Sunthi marich pippali equal amount mix and takes with honey for a month.
2. Ashwgandha shatavari vidhara kauchbeej choorna with misri in next months.
3. You can do eye pichu at bed time with pure cow ghee.
4. Instillation of cow ghee in both nostrils at bed time 2-2 drops.
These are not the complete treatment of myasthenia gravis this is only home remedy.
