Insomnia (Anidra)

Disorder of sleeplessness or Inadequate quality and quantity of sleep is called Insomnia. Generally a healthy person needs 8hrs sleep in 24 hrs if less than 6hrs may leads to develop insomnia.

It is a symptom of so many diseases not a separate disease, but now day sleeplessness is major problem in young age groups. It can be categorized on the basis of sleep duration.

  1. Transient insomnia: symptoms lasting less than 7 days
  2. Short term Insomnia: symptoms lasting from 1 weeks to 3 weeks
  3. Chronic Insomnia: symptoms lasting more than 3 weeks

Causes of Transient and Short term Insomnia: Changes in shift work persons, Excessive and unpleasant noise, Stressful situation in life, acute medical and surgical illness or hospitalization, withdrawal of sleeping pills, sedative, alcohol, travelling, Sometime constipation, acidity, GERD, and other digestive disorders

Causes of Long term and Chronic Insomnia: -It is usually linked to Psychiatric and Physiological condition, Physiological is CHD, Acid reflux, COPD, Asthma, Parkinsonism etc.

Psychological causes : are Anxiety, stress, schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, depression.

Certain Medicine : likes for common cold, asthma, CNS stimulants, can produce Insomnia. It can also develop during withdrawal of CNS stimulants and tricyclic antidepressant.

Symptoms of Insomnia:

  1. Sleep not sufficient
  2. Poor concentration on focusing work
  3. Headache
  4. Loss of memory
  5. Irritability and impaired social interaction, fatigue etc

Ayurvedic Concepts of insomnia or Anidra:

  1. Aahar
  2. Nidra
  3. Bramhcharya

These three are called as trayupastambha in Ayurveda (3 sub pillars of the body and mind) if anyone is disturbed they create imbalance your body and mind.

Six type of Nidra described by Maharsi charka and three types of Nidra by Acharya Sushruta these are.

Acharya Charaka -6 types of Nidra

  1. Tamobhava Nidra
  2. Sleshmsamudbhava Nidra
  3. Manosharirashramsambhava Nidra
  4. Agantuki Nidra
  5. Vyadhyanuvartini Nidra
  6. Ratriswabhavprabhava Nidra

Acharya sushruta -3 types of Nidra

  1. Vaishnavi
  2. Vaikariki
  3. Tamsi

Satva, Rajh, and Tama are the three mansika guna and play an important role to controlling and balancing our mind. Satva guna is prakasatva, Rajo guna is Pravartak, and Tamoguna is Jadakatva (Obstruction)

Sleep is originating from tamoguna. The nature of light is increases the tamas guna hence sleep occur in night. When sangyavaha srotas is obstructed by kapha dosa equivalent to tamas guna, connection between sensorgan and mind get blocked thus sleep originates. When Rajh guna predominanceof vata is the cause of loss of sleep or anidra. In ayurveda pathya apathy is play important role in balancing these dosas.

Increased vata dosa—loss of sleep/Anidra

Increased Pitta dosa ----Disturbed sleep /Alpanidra

Increased Kapha dosa -----Excessive sleep /Atinidra

Ayurvedic Treatment of Insomnia:

Ayurvedic treatment is based on vaataj pittaj and kaphaj aahar vihar. Vata shaman and kaphvardhan is the main principle of treating insomnia, vatanuloman chikitsa is very important in insomnia. Sleeplessness is the main symptoms at present lifestyle which is mainly stress, when gradually stress increasing day by day the sleeping disorder overshoots to Insomnia.

Ayurvedic panchkarma treatment is very helpful in case of insomnia, such as Nasyam, Shiroabhyangam, Shirodhara, Shirovasti Padabhyangam etc. if person suffering from severe insomnia needs to take panchkarma therapy for 15-21 days treatment if severity is moderate they can take 7-10 days therapy while severity is less they can plan oral medicine and head massage with medicated oils helps to recover from insomnia. Home Remedies:

Take proper diet timely even more diet in case of insomnia, never things to increasing weight because if you are suffering from insomnia your weight never increase after taking more diet.

-Take Bath with cold or tap water at evening also before meal

-Do head massage and pedal massage with coconut oil or any cooling oil at bed time

- Bramhi is helpful in this case you can take it as powder, capsule or tablet form daily twice

-Take sweet after meal specially in dinner (restricted to sugar patient)

-Avoid excessive intake of tea and coffee

-Avoid late night work
