Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis commonly called as hay fever, is an allergic response to some specific allergens. Some typical allergens like grass dust & mold. Pollen is the most common allergen. Human body generally releases histamine when it encounters an allergen. Histamine is a natural chemical which defends the body from allergen. This chemical may causes allergic rhinitis, which may have many uncomfortable symptoms like running nose, sneezing & eye itching.

This article focuses on allergic rhinitis due to plant pollens. This type of allergic rhinitis is commonly called hay fever or seasonal allergy.

Hay fever and allergies often run in families. If both of your parents have hay fever or other allergies, you are likely to have hay fever and allergies, too. The chance is higher if your mother has allergies.


Common causes of the allergic rhinitis include:

Animal dander (old skin).
Cat saliva.
Sometime temperature variation.

Pollen is biggest culprit, particularly during certain times of the year. Tree & flower pollens are more prevalent in spring, while grasses & weeds will produce more pollen in the summer & fall months.


  1. Patient will have multiple sneeze, particularly after you wake up in the morning.
  2. Will have a runny nose & postnasal drip. The drainage from a runny nose is caused by the allergies is generally clear & thin. But it may become thicker & cloudy with yellowish color if you get a nasal or sinus infection.
  3. Eyes are watery & itchy some time ropy discharge
  4. Ears, nose & throat are itchy
  5. These symptoms may persist for long term and may convert into chronic rhinitis or sinusitis. In ayurveda this is known as Pratisyaya. Pratisyaya is the primary stage of the disease it can produces many other diseases like Nasal obstruction, Nasal Polyp, Anosmia, jeerna Pratisyaya, Hearing loss, Tinnitus etc.


People with minor allergies generally require need a physical exam. Even though specific tests are there to help to determine and decide the best treatment and preventive measures. Some time allergic test is recommended for the find out of known allergens.


Treatment in ayurveda involves clearing the sinuses & expelling phlegm, alleviating the relevant dosha& detoxification. To permanently resolve this disorder, dietary & lifestyle adjustments is necessary in addition to this strengthening of the immune system. In ayurveda for the allergic rhinitis there are so many effective treatments to relive this disorder. Some panchkarma treatment is recommended in case of pratisyay/ allergic rhinitis like snehpaan, Vamana and Nasya. In initial stage of the disease we are recommended lukewarm water, lukewarm milk with sunthi choorna, sunthi and gud (jeggry) etc. While in later stage snehpaan and vaman panchkarma after that nasya is continue with oral medication.

Home Remedies for Allergic Rhinitis :

No cure exists for Meniere's disease, but a number of treatments can help reduce the severity and frequency of vertigo episodes. There are no treatments for the hearing loss that occurs with Meniere's disease. While ayurvedic treatment and panchkarma procedure improve the patients and also reduces all symptoms like vertigo hearing loss and tinnitus. Expected time of treatment depending upon the severity of symptoms but generally 1-2 year regular oral ayurvedic medication and 2-3 course of panchkarma therapy found gross improvement up to 50-80% depending upon the severity of disease .

Lukewarm water after every meal.
Lukewarm milk with turmeric powder, cow ghee, and dry ginger.
Early morning take a piece of Ginger and Gud (jeggry) with lukewarm water .
Apply til tail inside both nostril at bed time.
Take steam inhalation twice daily.
